You can't get it to stay lit or there is no gas and no flame at all? If it is a standing pilot and just will not stay lit it is probably the thermocouple. A thin metal tube with two wires coming from it, about the diameter of a pencil with it's end in the pilot flame. Heat from the flame creates a small electric current which powers the gas valve to stay open.

Had same problem, so hopefully I can save you a service call ($50-75)

Make sure fireplace is in Off position.
The tube where pilot flame would come out has a tiny hole about 2 inches from the opening of the tube.
Use canned air (like used to clean computer) to blow lint out of the tiny hole. Can also clean the burners with the canned air at the same time.

I hope you pilot will light after doing this. Repairmen suspected the coupling, as stated above, but it was as simple as lint in the tiny vent hole.

Was suggested to me to keep the logs vacuumed during the summer when not in use, and to cut the logs off and vacuum during the winter. I was only using a wet cloth in the fall and spring when the logs were not in use.

I have a very old AFCO gas furnace (@ 1950) - this is the first problem we've encountered in 10 years - it has a standing pilot which is connected to the gas line before the regulator and valve - the pilot also has 2 wires that act as a switch to the gas valve - everything is fine except for the...
