What are the symptoms if the cam gear is out on 95 civic?
My son just bought a 95 civic he drove it 1 day when the car stalled out. He could not get it to restart, when you turn the key it sounds like the starter is bad, it just spins and the motor does not turn over. He was first told it was the starter, then was told it is the cam gear. He did replace the starter with a remanufactured, but the same symptoms are there. Is it possible he got a bad refurbished starter or does this sound like the cam gear is out?

It sounds like your ring gear on the fly wheel.

With the key off, turn thr rngin by hand a few degrees and it will probably start. If it starts, one or more teeth are broken off the ring gear. It will fail to start anytime the engin stops at the same spot.

    Replace the ring gear.

The over-running clutch on the starter may be bad and not engaging the flywheel.

So we should get another starter you think?

    Thanks

I know it's weird, but it looks that way to me. Over 50% of rebuilt Honda distributors don't work. I'll start following what happens on rebuilt Honda starter motors.

Kitch428 is adamant about only not wasting your money on rebuilt Toyota starter motors.

I am sorry about the mis tying. It was the engine that you would turn a few degrees. This can be done by pulling on the fan belt with the ignition off. If you have a standard transmission, you could put it in a high gear and push the car slightly.

Either way, if it is a broken tooth on the ring gear, your starter will now be lined up with a good tooth.

It was wishful thinking, but replacing the starter didn't work. Since he was told it was the cam gear he decided to take a look for himself, he can see the two gears and I guess there is a chuck (not sure what its really called) attached to one of them to allow the teeth on the gears to spin simultaneously and not hit each other, but the chuck is striped. He is going to try and replace the cam gear, do either of you have any tips on doing this step. I know this is a big job with timing and all.

    Thanks for your help.

It's best to have it professionally done. Many have tried and failed.
