    5(x)=2(y) r 1
    Each person contributes $5 to purchase 2 items and had $1 left over. If the same number of people contribute $8 and can purchase 3 items and have $11.50 left over, how many people are contributing?

    Well, the is only one thing you don't know, and that's the price of the item.

    So, let it be 'x'.

    2x + 1 = 5

    'Twice the price of an item, added to the remaining one dollar makes 5 dollars'.

    Now, you can solve for x and proceed with the rest of the question.

    The number of people contributing
    is 20.

    Proof A = (20*5) - 1 = 99/2 = 49.50 each

    Proof B = (20*8) -11.5 = (160 -11.50) = 148.50/3 = 49.50 each

    Sorry, I made a really silly mistake here. I was in too much of a hustle to see the whole question :o

    Yes, you have got the first equation, that is :
    5x = 2y + 1

    where x = number of people and y the price.

    For the second piece of information, it's similar:

    8x = 3y + 11.5

    You only need to solve them simultaneously and you're done.

    Rolcam already got the answer. :)
