    During cold weather it starts right up but sometimes the motor surges for about 5sec. Or just stops running. To get it running when it is acting up I keep the starer ingaged for a couple seconds after it first starts to keep it running.

    Instead, try turning the glow plugs on twice in cold weather. Also, be sure to use full-synthetic HDDO.
