Cleaning a flame senser with a dollar bill?!
Just want some fact on cleaning flame sensers. Our local gas company has taken it upon themselves to try trouble shooting gas furnaces. I have gone to many homes after the gas guy has been there and all I had to do was clean the flame senser(correctly I believe). I always use emory cloth to clean flame sensers. The gas guy has been showing the customers how to clean flame sensers(which is great, I always show my customers how to clean the senser(correctly). Only thing is, the gas guy is telling them to clean the senser with a dollar bill?? They say that using steel wool or emery cloth is ruining the senser, but every time I have to go to the home owner, their flame senser is not clean at all(because gas guy cleaned it with a dollar bill?! Maybe this should be under comedy and humor. Anyway, I would appreciate any and all product literature on proper cleaning of flame sensers. As many different brands and makes as you can supply. I will be printing these out to end this once and for all. Once I can have facts in hand, I will make them buy me a beer while I expain to them that they should not be giving advice on gas furnaces.

PS. Im also curious, if cleaning the flame senser works OK with a dollar bill, would it work better with a fifty dollar bill.. lol.

Fifty dollar bill? Try Hundred Dollar Bill instead.

I'm not in the business but just using good old common sense why would these folks at the gas company even recommend using a dollar bill instead of emery cloth? Do they have any specific reason they recommend a bill?

I'm guessing they get paid way too much, and are always trying to find new ways to use their money.

Must be an accepted practice. I got a lot of hits. Here is one of them: Water Heater will not stay lit - Airstream Forums

Currency doesn't work that well. Try cleaning it with a utility bill. :D I save pieces of sanding cloth that are semi-worn from cleaning copper. Effective without gouging.

Seems to me it would be better to use 4 quarters rather than a dollar bill,, or maybe two 50 cent pieces.

Maybe I'm just to lazy to start carrying cash again. Wish I could use my credit card to clean it.

Your supposed to use the customer's money and keep it as a tip because the customer probably doesn't like dirty money.:D
