Caffeine, in soft drinks and coffee can cause irregular heartbeats. That's why you're told to stay away from them.

Did you have an ultrasound, or is that planned?

Sometimes fetuses do have arrhythmia's but will outgrow it.

For you, try to stay calm as it reduces your blood pressure and will put less stress on the fetus.

Let us know what the doctor says. Good luck.

    Is your doctor concerned?

If not, then don't let it worry you too much.

Make the appointment with the specialist, go from there. No reason to worry until there's something to worry about.

Let us know how it goes.

This is right up my alley, as this is what I do for a living. So, here goes. I hope I can make it clear enough for you to understand.

It's very hard to discern a fetal arrhythmia. The normal fetal heart rate is 110 - 160 beats per minute. Now we have what is called variability. Variability is the "bouncing" of the heart rate. 5-25 beats per second is called moderate variability. 2 or more beats per second is called marked variability, where less than 5 is considered minimal (dangerous).

Now, what you eat and/or drink is of study by many doctors. Medications can cause increase/decrease in variability.

I would not concern myself too much at this point unless your baby's heart rate stays above 160 beats per minute without you having a fever. And, by all means, if your doctor recommends that you stay away from caffeine, please do so.

In all honesty, you should have been steering clear of caffeine for the entire pregnancy.

If I wasn't clear, or you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

When I was 30 weeks pregnant I went for a check up and they said my baby was having irregular heartbeat, so they sent me to another doctor and by the time I got there 4 hours later everything was fine. They told me sometimes it just does that. I wouldn't stress over it unless the doctor is. Just try to stay positive.
