Letter of introduction to a potential supplier
How do I approach a potential supplier/manufacturer to supply their products for my new business start up?

I wish to list there products for sale on my website but my company (and website) has not started up yet!

So here's the problem! The company’s primary service offering is not retail or sales... but is to provide technical services, such as maintenance and repairs for example! And so the company will only take up the retail line of business if I can negotiate and order from a sufficient amount of suppliers/manufacturers.

But with no up and running business profile to show them, how do I get them to take me seriously?.

What would that initial letter say?. Include?. To sow the seed, so the prospect of a long term working relationship is a reality from the outset and my letter is not just put straight into the shredder! ……… So back to my original question:

How do I approach a potential supplier/manufacturer to supply their products for my new (“proposed”) business start up?

Hope you can help ? :-)

    Hi, Gas safety man!

What is your business concerning, please?

You know more about your business than anyone else here. My suggestion would be for you to consider posting a draft of such a letter here, without putting any contact information in it, so that we can advise you as to how you might make improvements to it, that would be great!

    Hi Clough,

Thanks for the links and time to respond!

Here's what I have drafted for you, criticism !
    -----------------------------------------------------------
    Hi there,

I would be interested in listing your product for sale on my site once it has been launched and place a small order (30) for that trial/start up period.

To help promote this product I will need to display a bit of info on it and use of logo ECT would handy for brand recognition. I would be grateful if you could help assist me with this because as you Know (product name) is a specialised product and will be aimed at a specific target market.

My web domain will be --------.co.uk and we will have a lot of aspiring plumbing and heating engineers visiting to use our online learning resource. So as well as existing customers, we will also be extending the reach of your product to those new to the industry and therefore introducing them to your brand!

We favour your product considerably (and me personally) and will sell no alternative product for its particular task. This is due to the nature of our business and the message we sent out, we aim to maintain professionalism throughout the industry and strongly protect our reputation of just that.

If you could please help in whatever way you can, it would be in the best interest of the products identity and distribution.

Some examples of what I may need are:
    · Technical data
    · Product description (white & blue paper docs)
    · Products function (white & blue paper docs)
    · Any material can re-use without breeching any copyrights
    · Anything you feel I could use basically...

I hope we can build an effective working relationship in due course and hope to hear from you soon.

    Regards

    Richard Randall

    Hi, Gas safety man!

Below, is a possible re-write of your letter.

    Thanks!

Dear [Specific name to whom this is to be addressed.]

Please accept this correspondence and an indication of our interest in listing your products for sale on our site on the Internet. We hope that this is a proposition that you'll accept for the mutual benefit of both of our companies and interests.

If it is convenient for you, I would be interested in listing your product for sale on my site once it has been launched. I will let you know when the site is ready to launch.

In order to help promote your product, I would appreciate having information about your product and permission to use your logo for recognition of what you can supply. I would be grateful if you could help assist me with this because as you Know (product name) is a specialised product and will be aimed at a specific target market.

Our web domain will be --------.co.uk and we will have a lot of aspiring plumbing and heating engineers visiting to use our online learning resource. So as well as existing customers, we will also be extending the reach of your product to those new to the industry and therefore introducing them to your brand!

We favour your product considerably (omit) and will sell no alternative product for its particular task. This is due to the nature of our business and the message we send out to potential customers. We aim to maintain professionalism throughout the industry and strongly protect your reputation as well as ours.

If you would please help in whatever way you can, it would be in the best interest of the products identity and distribution.

Some examples of what we may need are:
    · Technical data
    · Product description (white & blue paper docs)
    · Products function (white & blue paper docs)
    · Any material that can be re-used without breeching any copyrights
    · Anything else you feel we could basically use in the marketing of your products on our website.

We are hopeful to enter into a mutually effective working relationship and look forward to an opportunity to discuss with you how we might best be of service to you.
