One Pupil Larger Than the Other One. Cause for Concern?
One pupil larger than the other one. Would this sort of condition be a cause for concern?
My mother had one pupil that was larger than the one in her other eye. Would that be a cause for concern? I was told that it wasn't uncommon for that sort of thing to happen and that it wasn't really a concern. She was elderly. Does this sort of thing happen in younger people?
Thanks!

Yes it does, it's usually nothing to be worried about.

Hi, Momma!
So, why would it not be something about which to be worried, please?
Thanks!

I don't know, I'm not an Optometrist. I've seen it very often and it's never been a medical issue, just an aesthetic one.

This is something that everyone should be concerned about! It can be a genetic defect or it could mean there is a tumor in the brain. Anyone with this should see an Ophthalmologist not an Optometrist. And if they can't find anything see an eye specialist referred by your Ophthalmologist. If the specialist can't find anything see your physician for a scan just to be on the safe side. I am currently going through a series of tests myself.

I agree that it should be checked out, but it's not always something to worry about. I know MANY people with this issue that are only effected aestetically.

I had my 4 year old son at hospital appointment today for 1st consultation as we think he may have petite mal epilepsy? He is being referred for tests EEG I think she said... anyway she pointed out to me that he had left pupil larger than the right,(I hadn't EVER noticed it) I instantly asked if that was a cause for concern and she said " NOT AT ALL, it's quite common and there is ABSOLUTELY nothing to worry about.
I hope this helps others.
