When to give paracetamol to toddler with high temperature?
My 2 year old son has never been sick until now but since yesterday, his temperature has been between 38.6 and 39.6 degrees Celsius. His normal basal temperature is 36.5. He has also come down with some sort of cold virus. I do not believe there is any infection at this point as there is no indication of ear, chest infections at all.

He is otherwise quite happy still and is still eating and breastfeeding normally, just a bit grumpy at times.

I realise that a high temperature is the body's natural way to fight virus and infection but am wondering at what level should you administer paracetamol? Some people are telling me 39 degrees and others are saying 40. Some people are telling me not to use it at all for a high temperature but only for pain and discomfort. I am confused.

    Thanks.

You should only give your child medication if directed by a doctor.

Have you spoken to your pediatrician?

Paracetamol (tylonol, acetomenaphin) is an analgesic that can negativly affect a child's liver function. Care should always be taken with using any over the counter medication.

I haven't spoken to a paediatrician. In Australia, GPs are the first point of consultation for a child. Paediatricians are specialists and only seen if the GP refers a child for a condition or illness that requires a specialist. I will take him to the GP if he gets worse though.

    Thanks for your advice.
