Often attributed as a lifestyle to Mies Van der Rohe (architect) but quoted first by the painter Adrea del Sarto (1486-1531) "To paint a little thing like that you smeared
Carelessly passing with your robes afloat--
Yet do much less ... --so much less!
Well, less is more, Lucrezia: I am judged. "
The concept is that simpler is better, be it a building, artwork, or anything. The best "true" art, architecture, or anything, is not improved by unnecessary decoration, trim, junk, or other additions. It is similar to a minimalist point of view. Wikipedia describes minimalism as "where the work is stripped down to its most fundamental features and core self expression", very clearly similar to "less is more" as a fundamental thought.
