    It all depends on your beliefs.

    Either it was the big bang theory or God created the heavens and earth in 6 days with the 7th day of rest.

    Hi Azreen89,

    That's a great question. The Earth formed about 4.5 billion years ago as part of the formation of the solar system--the Sun and the planets.

    What follows is a very simplistic version of what happened--you can read in more detail at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Earth) But basically a whirling cloud of gas and dust condensed to form the sun and flattened out --like spinning pizza dough :). The outer parts of this spinning mass gradually condensed into planets--small dense rocky planets toward the inside, massive gas planets toward the outside.

    Once the Earth solidified (from molten rock), it wasn't long before it cooled off and the oceans formed. There's fairly good evidence that something hit the Earth early on, knocking a big chunk of it out into space. That big chunk is the Moon!

    I recommend the book The Big Splat, if you want to know more about the formation of the moon.

    I hope this starts to answer some of your questions.
