    The Koran and Judaism
Hezbollah leader, Nasrallah states that the Koran says that if Muslim people kill Jewish people, they will get 7 virgins and go to heaven. Im almost sure there is nothing like this in the Koran. Can you please verify this for me?

    Thanks a lot

    Hi Antigona-

I have been searching myself to try to understand the Koran, Muslims, Islam...
It appears that there are secular , moderate, & fundamental Muslims. The Fundamentals or Radicals is where this X-rated view of paradise seems to come from.

It looks like all non-Muslims to them should be doomed, not just Jews.

Anyway, I found an interesting link regarding the Fundamentalists:

In case learning German is too daunting of a task for that interesting new book NK's link mentions... if anyone is interested in the three "faiths of Abraham" as she puts it-- Judaism, Islam and Christianity, read anything by Karen Armstrong. She has produced an incredible, thoroughly researched and extensive body of spiritually articulate material. Even her latest autobiography, The Spiral Staircase, was hard for me to put down. Not bad for an ex Catholic nun fighting her dysfunctional upbringing and the resulting basement level self esteem. I am not ashamed to admit her passionate bid for a global compassion for our collective humanity through understanding world religions in the last dozen pages of that book made me both weep and rejoice. And she writes so beautifully real, its easy reading even for the heady topics.

The extreme groups of Islam teaching has little in compairson with the moderate average Muslim. But just like Christianity or the Jewish faith, there are many many splits ( not as many as Christians) but a lot of splits with some various opinions on how these beleifs are inforced.

That is why you have two groups killing each other in Iraq, because of political but also because for at least the one group, you can't have a government rule without it being religious.

And then even within each group you have extreme groups following speicific clerics who are more extreme in how far you go to make your beliefs happen.

And honestly I don't know whose is the real true form, since of course all of them claim thiers is. But as with all the major faiths, most likely all have changed over time and society in many ways.

So not only do some groups want to kill jews, christians and any faith that will not convert, they also see even other muslims as non beleivers if they are not following their faith to certain levels.

Compare this lets say to the Apostolic Church that is very strong in women wearing dresses or skirts, no make up and the such, And then you have lets say the Episcopalians who have women priests, have gay Bishops and more. Well in America these people merely talk about each other, doom the other in talk to hell and may lobby to pass laws against the other.

But if this was in the middle east, you merely try and kill the other if they don't convert. It is a different mindset, and that is why people in the US and parts of Europe just can't understand it. To be honest I don't really understand it.

Of course maybe the 7 virgins would all look like saddam or something and it is really like the christian idea of hell

At the risk of sounding full of myself, I think I may understand it. There isn't much people do, in any culture, that I don't in some way manage to relate to. I attribute that to extensive reading and a vigorous pursuit of understanding of what it is to be a human, flaws and all. We are, in my mind, not all the different from each other.

And I see a lot of people-- by way of books, blogs, discussion groups and such-- coming to a better understanding of this topic all the time and rapidly too, Fr Chuck. This is the Information Age and many are taking up the challenge of it. For those who still don't, I can only encourage... investigate more, discuss more, read more?

Though it's a little different answer to the qestions, but I think it maches with the question in one or another way.

I found this on the irf.net website.

Dr. Zakir Naik answered the following the question. (which relates to the question asked by antigona. I think, if not accept my aplogy)

"Doesn't Islam promote violence, bloodshed and brutality since the Qur'an says that Muslims should kill the kuffar where ever they find them?

    Answer:

A few selected verses from the Qur'an are often misquoted to perpetuate the myth that Islam promotes violence, and exhorts its followers to kill those outside the pale of Islam.

    1. Verse from Surah Taubah
The following verse from Surah Taubah is very often quoted by critics of Islam, to show that Islam promotes violence, bloodshed and brutality:

"Kill the mushriqeen (pagans, polytheists, kuffar) where ever you find them."
    [Al-Qur'an 9:5]

    2. Context of verse is during battlefield
Critics of Islam actually quote this verse out of context. In order to understand the context, we need to read from verse 1 of this surah. It says that there was a peace treaty between the Muslims and the Mushriqs (pagans) of Makkah. This treaty was violated by the Mushriqs of Makkah. A period of four months was given to the Mushriqs of Makkah to make amends. Otherwise war would be declared against them. Verse 5 of Surah Taubah says:

"But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is oft-forgiving, Most merciful."
    [Al-Qur'an 9:5]

This verse is quoted during a battle.

    3. Example of war between America and Vietnam
We know that America was once at war with Vietnam. Suppose the President of America or the General of the American Army told the American soldiers during the war: "Wherever you find the Vietnamese, kill them". Today if I say that the American President said, "Wherever you find Vietnamese, kill them" without giving the context, I will make him sound like a butcher. But if I quote him in context, that he said it during a war, it will sound very logical, as he was trying to boost the morale of the American soldiers during the war.

    4. Verse 9:5 quoted to boost morale of Muslims during battle

Similarly in Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 5 the Qur'an says, "Kill the Mushriqs where ever you find them", during a battle to boost the morale of the Muslim soldiers. What the Qur'an is telling Muslim soldiers is, don't be afraid during battle; wherever you find the enemies kill them.

    5. Shourie jumps from verse 5 to verse 7
Arun Shourie is one of the staunchest critics of Islam in India. He quotes the same verse, Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 5 in his book 'The World of Fatwahs', on page 572. After quoting verse 5 he jumps to verse 7 of Surah Taubah. Any sensible person will realise that he has skipped verse 6.

    6. Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 6 gives the answer
Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 6 gives the answer to the allegation that Islam promotes violence, brutality and bloodshed. It says:

"If one amongst the pagans ask thee for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah; and then escort him to where he can be secure that is because they are men without knowledge."
    [Al-Qur'an 9:6]

The Qur'an not only says that a Mushriq seeking asylum during the battle should be granted refuge, but also that he should be escorted to a secure place. In the present international scenario, even a kind, peace-loving army General, during a battle, may let the enemy soldiers go free, if they want peace. But which army General will ever tell his soldiers, that if the enemy soldiers want peace during a battle, don't just let them go free, but also escort them to a place of security?

This is exactly what Allah (swt) says in the Glorious Qur'an to promote peace in the world."
