Can an employer make it mandatory that you attend weekly training sessions, but not pay you for that training?

Where and is the person taking classes an employee or training to be an employee?

He is employed in Missouri. The training is for his job they have weekly training sessions for the paid and volunteer staff. Until recently the paid staff was not required to be there unless they were on duty. But now they are wanting them to come in on their time off without pay.

Sounds to me like the classes are required. Consequently, the employer needs to pay for the time.

The problem is what to DO about it. If the employee is "at will", and he complains, he could be terminated with NO recourse.

No, it's not fair, but because jobs are scarce, employers can take advantage of it. Times will change, though, and the good employees will remember how they were cheated.

Or, if there's a union or an employment contract, or he's a SKILLED, hard to replace employee, or there's a large group of people who can join forces...
