    Claiming child on taxes
I currently have custody of my son, last November he moved in with his father due to issues he has. I am giving his father joint custody of him, yet I still supply all necessities. Clothes, school supplies, I am wanting to divide equally everything during the custody thing, I will pay half of everything plus child support and every other year the taxes are alternated. Is this fair or will his father have the right to claim him fully?

Its fair if its what you agree on. The court or the IRS is not going to get involved unless there is a dispute.

Well in my opinion he doesn't support him mentally. That is the problem I am having, I have had custody of my son for 12 years and all his father did was write a check. My son has mental problems and was put in a residential treatment home for 3 months, during that time we had counciling meetings and all that good stuff and his father never showed up to any of them. While my son is in school his father never showed up for anything. My son is in private counciling now and just when my son went to live with him is when he accually started to go to his meetings. I had to take off work to pick him up from school, take him to all his appointments, pay all copayments, and insurance, all he did was pay me 450 a month. Yes it is a decent amount of money but where is the mental support as being a father. Now my son lives with him and I am giving him joint custody cause he will be staying with me during half the year. I still supply insurance, buy all his necessities, pick him up from school, take him to his appointments. And all I am asking is for us to alternate claiming him on taxes. He is refusing this. So now we have mediation today and of course we are not going to agree on anything so next week we have court. My nerves are a reck cause all I want is what's best for my son.

If you don't feel living with his father is what is best for him then why are you so open to the idea and even "giving" him joint custody? Did you originally have full custody and now you are going to court to have custody split?
