Hi there,

I am trying to find a free download for Microsoft Word, but can't seem to. If someone can find it for me that would be great.

That's because any free download for Word would be illegal. It would be pirated software. (and you really should know better than to ask a question like that)

But there is good news for you. You can download Open Office for free which includes a word processor similar to Microsoft's Word and that uses compatible file types.

You can find it at www.openoffice.org

I DO know better than that, I didn't know that it was one that wasn't allowed to be downloaded for free. I do actually have Openoffice. I sent a resume to a potential employer and they asked me to send it back in word format. So I assumed I needed word. How do I save it in Word format on Openoffice??

Use File>Save As and chose doc format Or Word 97-2003 or something like that.

You really think that any part of Microsoft Office would be legally available for free?

I don't know much about computers, so no, I don't know.

Okay, so I did that, and then I opened it again to see what it looked like and it opened in internet explorer and was just a web browser full of codes.

Why did you open in IE? That's not going to display a Word doc properly.

I didn't. I saved it in word format and once it was saved. I double clicked on the icon, and it open in IE.

Which means you have IE set as the default association for DOC files.

My sidebar to this would be for you to install a PDF creator. I have used the free program PrimoPDF for years and have nothing but praise.

The point of installing this is that Primo is installed as "printer". So from inside any program of any kind, even a browser, when you select PRINT you can choose PDF and save the document to a PDF. (Portable Document Format)

The benefit: PDFs are universally readable and professionally accepted. The only thing a company you've applied for a job needs to be able to do is print your resume and/or cut-n-paste data from it into their documents, all of which is simple and doable with PDFs.

So, that's my two cents. Install PrimoPDF, reprint your resume as a PDF and submit it that way. I would be 100% surprised that they balk at that in any way.

Actually OpenOffice can save as PDF right from within the program.

The problem with this is that some empoyers and especially some agencies want the resumes in Word format so they can read it into resume tracking software or edit it for submission to a client.

If someone asks for a Word doc, you can ask if a PDF is acceptable.

That's all a great idea, but my resume was requested in word format from a potential employer. I just need to know how to do that. The way I was told to do it didn't work for me.

Actually if you see it as a resume.doc then the employer will indeed have it in the correct format on their end. It's your computer that isn't configured correctly for .doc files - which is really weird since the installation of openOffice would have made that association during the installation.+

What do you mean it didn't work for you? Just because you tried to open it in IE doesn't mean it didn't work. If you chose the correct Save As option then you can send it.

If you are still concerned, type a short test letter in Open Office, save it as a Word documenbt and attach it to a post. Someone with the real Word, will check to make sure it opens in Word.

I already told you that I did not open it in IE, I double clicked on the saved document and that's what it opened in.

And I told you that was because you have Doc files associated with IE.

That's your problem. You obviously didn't save it as a 97-2003 Word Doc format. That's why it tried to open in IE and way it didn't look correct.
