    Hi Peggy,

On the front of your heater you will find two inspection plates. Open up the bottom one and you will see a thermostat. The factory setting's 120, I keep mine at 110, that way I don't have to temper the hot water with cold. If the water suddenly became too cool I would have the elements checked. If one burned out you would have the symptoms you describe. Good luck, Tom

Thanks so much, Tom, I will try it and let you know what happens. It is a relatively new water heater so I'm hoping the elements are OK.

I live in an 8-year old townhouse and have an A.O Smith 50 gallon hot water heater the same age. The plumber told me it needs to be replaced (does this sound like a reasonable time frame for that?) and mentioned something about a wags valve. Is this something I should have installed or is it...
