SOS is a morse code distress signal. The code was adopted because of the sequence of 3 dashes, 3 dots and 3 dashes. The letters were not chosen because of any meaning or acronym.

Well it is for sure that SOS does not stand for the following:

iSave Our Ship/Souls", for "Stop Other Signals", for "Send Our Saviour/Succour", for "Sure of Sinking", or for the Russian _Spasiti Ot Smerti_ (= "save from death"). The signal "...---...", recommended for international distress calls at the international Radio Telegraph Conference of 1906 and officially adopted in 1908, was not chosen for any alphabetic significance.
