What else might the pain balms be called then? They could be called something else that would help in searching for the information.
Thanks!

It is something to think about because they might have totally different types of names and descriptions than what we're used to using.
Do you think that any of the following synonyms for balm might be appropriate. If so, which ones, please?
Thanks!
Analgesic, application, balsam, cerate, compound, cream, demulcent, dressing, embrocation, emollient, formula, lotion, medicine, ointment, potion, poultice, preparation, prescription, salve, soother, soothing agent, unction, unguent

I appreciate your initiative to solve this. But it is not sufficient. When trying this history of pain medicine in india it comes all about pain management and a book of novel.

Hi Buddy,
Pain balms in the history of India are rooted in its traditional system of medicine - Ayurveda and the balms were generally put under the category of LEPAM meaning Annointments / in modern term Ointments. The specific term for Pain balm is Vedanahara [Vedana - Pain, Hara - Relieving], Vedana Samhari [That which destroys pain], Vedana Sthapana [that which stops pain], Shoola samhari [That which stops shooting pain] etc based on specific action of a particular pain balm / Lepam. In ayurveda there are several types of pains enumerated and each type has a particular lepam formulation / ingredient mix.
You would be better off in reading through Ayurvedic Texts like Charaka samhita, Sushrutha Samhita, Ashtanga Hrudaya etc which are Treatises on this ancient subject dating back to thousands of years. Better go to a Ayurvedic Physician rather than buying the texts.
Ask in case you need any more clarifications.
