    1992 Grand Marquis?
How can I tell if the solenoid or the starter is bad? I replaced the battery and the car clicks. I was told to jump the solenoid but don't have a clue how to do it. I don't want to take the starter off if I don't need to.
I appreciate any help that is given!

If, when the switch is actuated, the starter motor does not operate at all but the solenoid clicks, the problem lies with either the battery, the main solenoid contacts or the starter motor itself. Before doing anything else, I would disconnect the negative battery terminal and clean the terminals and connectors to the solenoid. They can become very corroded. Reconnect the battery and see if everything works. To check the solenoid, connect a jumper lead between the battery and the ignition switch wire terminal (the small terminal) on the solenoid. If the starter motor now operates, the solenoid is OK and the problem is in the ignition switch, neutral start switch or the wiring. If the above doesn't solve the problem, I would try replacing the solenoid, because Ford starters are tough. Let your experience with the starter and your common sense guide your approach.

1992 Pontiac Grand Am [ 5 Answers ]

Hi, I have a 1992 Pontiac Grand Am. Recently, to make a long story short, I had to drive through a flood (large puddle of water) and the car was submerged in water (the water came up to the door inside the car) and had to be pushed out to higher ground. I was able to start it after 2 days after...
