Hi, I have a jack russell dog that I love so much. The problem is he needs to go to the vet. Hr eas neutered a few years ago, and now spases out completely and gets very aggressive- most refuse to see him- even with a cruel muzzle on- I don't know what to do- is there a doggie valium I could give him first- he needs his heartworm and other shots- the whole thing is so traumatic- help!sincerely, tjbfluffy

Yes,dogs can be given sedatives.They use sedatives on animals when they when they fly.Some animals have to be mildly sedated for even simple procedures as they, as you say*spaz out*.
Have your vet give you something before he needs to go in for his visit.

There is a product called comicalm which my mum has had success with.

Also try a teaspoon of Brandy to calm him down.

Shaz,Love you hon, but alcohol can be very toxic to dogs.

Alcohol can cause serious intoxications in pets, and many dogs are attracted to it. Every year hundreds of dogs die after a single about of alcohol consumption. Clean up glasses after holiday parties. Dogs are often attracted by the sweet taste of drinks, especially eggnog.

Small amounts can be fine... we have given been giving our brandy for years... only ever on certain occasions like vet trips :) It is commonly used by show people.

I do agree that in larger amounts it can be extremely harful to them.

artlady agrees: my friends dog got deathly sick from a small amount,I am sure some dogs can handle their booze but Lucky had to see the vet.It was only a little bit of a daquari,not knowing the dog it seems better to err on the side of caution.

That's a fair comment, I've never really worried about it but you are right, better to be safe than sorry! :)
Stick to the vet prescribed sedatives :)

When I was about to take a long trip with my cat, my vet recommended purchasing Valerian - it is a natural vitamin supplement that can be used as Valium.

Granted, you're talking about a dog, but my cat is 25 pounds - his breed is HUGE! So, I think it would work for your dog.

But, the best advice is to get your vet to perscribe something before hand, give it to your puppy, and then go see him.

Jacks are bred to be high-strung, so your little dude sounds normal. Definitely get something from the vet, ALL the home remedies have risks but the vet will know the risks with meds he/she prescribes.
