Did you take apart any of the wires in the box? (I hope not) Are the two blacks connected together? Are the two whites connected together?

If you removed an old fixture, what wires were it connected to? (Any grammarians here... this doesn't sound right with either was or were?)

What type of fixture is it, and where did you get it? In the US and Canada, most lights are 120 volts. Fixtures are manufactured with a white, a black, and a ground wire. Other countries use 220 volts, and have different color codes.

Also, if it is a foreign fixture, you may have trouble finding the right lamps (light bulbs) for it. (I once had to rewire a chandelier for an English friend of mine to make it work on US electricity.)
