    Theft over $5000 from Employer
What are the possible outcomes for my boyfriend if 6 months ago he stole over $5000 from his employer?

Now he has been called in to give his past years bank statements. They are not accusing him, but he will admit to it - and wants to make up for what he has done. It is a first time offence. He also comes from a low income family, living below the poverty line. He has not done it before and will not do it again, but we would like to know what we are looking to deal with, all possiblilities. I know the max is a 10 year jail sentence.

    Help? Thank you!!

Honestly... we're both just so scared at this point. We are both in school, and about to be married - he fully admits and regrets it was the stupidest thing he's ever done... but we aren't sure what to do. We have some people we are going to get in touch with, but we can't until tomorrow... but that doesn't help us getting to sleep tonight...

You need to consult a lawyer, are you in Canada? If so theft from employer is treated very seriously, however if it is first offence most likely no jail time, maybe a discharge might be possible depending on the case facts and your boyfriend's cooperation as well as remorse.

    Hello k:

You make the mistaken assumption that once a crime happens, somebody looks up the punishment in a book, and there you have it. That isn't how it happens.

What you need to know, is the outcome is NOT written in stone, and there are MANY possible outcomes. There are LOTS of things you can and SHOULD do, that will have a positive effect on the outcome.

The FIRST of those is to have your boyfriend keep his mouth shut, and the second would be to hire a lawyer. If you have to make PAYMENTS to a lawyer, I'd for sure do it.

Tell him not to say anything to the police. Get legal council and go from there. If he goes in and admits everything, he will be arrested right than and there.
