    Please tell me how to type in an exponent using a keyboard.

    You can do it in Word by formatting an exponent. Some people use ^ as the exponentiation operator. So x^3 is "x-cubed" or "x to the third power". Some people use "**" as the operator but for general usage, that seems more difficult to read.
