Do dead mice smell of rotten eggs?
I have a smell of bad eggs coming from my electricity meter. Do dead mice smell of bad eggs? If so how long would the smell last for?

    Hi, altamo!

I guess that the smell of dead mice could be described as bad eggs. If it is a dead mouse or mice, then the smell should be gone in a couple of weeks, I would think. I've had them die in heating ducts of my home in the past, and it took about that long for the smell to be gone.

However, if your electric meter might be like the ones that we have around here, they are sealed in such a way that mice can't get into them. So, something might also be going on with the works inside your meter.

In order to be safe, my suggestion to you would be to call the Gas & Electric company up to see if they will send someone out to check your meter. Around where I live, it wouldn't cost me anything for them to send someone out. Maybe it's the same way where you are.

    Thanks!

Rotten eggs have a bad sulphur smell and dead mice smell like rotten meat. The smell can last from 5 days to 2 weeks depending on humidity and air circulation. Is your meter inside or outside?

Your not confusing the gas meter with the electric meter are you.

You gave a very succinct explanation concerning the differences between the smells, ballengerb1! I had thought about the sulfur smell, but didn't think to compare a dead mouse to rotten meat.

    Thanks!
