I'd like to tie into the main line from my house to my septic system for the wet bar in my basemsent (only reason I pick the main line as it's the only line near where the bar will go). The problem is I don't know how to locate the water line. Is there an easy way to do this myself? I've heard people suggest using coat hangars as "divining rods". Would I be better off to hire someone who does leak detection to use the sensitive listening devices to try to locate the line?

Can I easily cut through the concrete myself to locate the line?

I see the fist part of the question as the sewer line to locate which can be done By a plumber that a locater. This is a snake that is put into the your house sewer line and on the end of that snake is a signal that's is bounced to the hand held Locater that it finds exactly where the sewer line is and tells you the depth of it. It's the PERFECT way to locate a sewer line as long as there is a clean out or a drain to get into.
Now the second part of your question Os your water lines in the Concrete also? Or under slab.

The house is 4 years old so I believe the plumbing is below the slab
Not sure if those two typically go together or not

On a house 4 years old the drainage is probably PVC. The locator Boat recommends will only detect metal pipes and lines. However I have one that detects PVC, ABS plus metal pipes as well,(see image). One thing that you can do with some locators is place a metal snake in the lines and look for the snake.

21boat, your advice about the cable locater was perfect. Just attach a sending device to the end of a sewer cable, send cable down drain, and follow it with the receiver. Very accurate device. One of the best systems for locating were sewer runs, no matter what type of pipe is involved.

Roughly what is the fee for something like this?

Would it be reasonable to expect / ask a plumber who locates the lines to cut the concrete? I can certainly do that myself, but might be worth a pro doing it
