    Where does the disability come from? Private carrier? Work related? SS? I think it matters.

    Yes, it definitely matters!

    If the source of the disability income is from a plan for which your employer paid the premiums, then the income is subject to income taxes.

    If, however, you paid the premiums with post-tax dollars, or the income is from the Social Security Administration, then the disability income is tax-exempt.
