    Pre-paid Legal
I saw an ad for an insurance company called Pre-Paid Legal. Has anyone either sold or used this service? From your experience, would you recommend the service?

My company offers an optional benefit to purchase pre-paid legal services. There are a lot of things buying into the service can do for you, such as,

    Prepare your will
    Represent you in traffic court
Aid you by reviewing legal contracts/documents

And more. We provide people with a list called "101 Reasons to have Pre-Paid Legal" which obviously, goes into more depth.

It's hard to say if it's worth it to you, because you have to assess your life and the services offered by this plan. The cost is also a factor. I can say the people at my workplace who have it and who have used it, are thankful they signed up.

Thanks for the reply. I am going to try to search for the "101 reasons" list.

I'll see if I can find a copy of it for you on my hard drive as well. Good luck!

I have known several people that have sold it, most stop after a few months after they run out of family and friends to sell it to.

Most offer you unlimited phone call and a free will done if you take their service. Their plan does not include free court visits. From the ones I have seen, their "discount" rate is OK, but you can normally find a cheaper attorney local if you shop around.

The other is, normally the attorney is not in the city you live, I find one or two per state. And as with any attorney they are not expert on every subject. Also beyound giving advice, most of their actual help is not free but still billable.

If you have the need to ask an attorney a question more than two or three times a year, it may be worth it.

I have prepaid legal through work, and it has been worth it to me to have the piece of mind that I can have a lawyer when I need one, say if I get a ticket and want to fight it or have the fines or points lowered. I pay about $112 a year for it. Getting a will done and those kinds of paperwork paid for it for that year. I've also used it for a step parent adoption. You just have to decide what you need done ahead of time and buy it for that year if you think it will pay for itself by the services you use. They can send demand letters if someone owes you money and help with creditors if you are behind.

I have been a pre-paid legal member for over a year and used it a dozen times in that year. I think the service is awesome.

You have also posted that you are an investigator and somehow associated with pre-paid legal services - correct?

That is correct. I was a police officer in the UK for 9 years and since have been a surveillance investigator for over 13 years, moving to Canada nearly 8 years ago. I am the Manager for South West Ontario for the 3rd largest investigative company in Ontario with over 50 employees.

I was introduced to Pre-paid Legal over a year ago and have used the service for getting my wills done for my family, had numerous contracts looked at and also used it to collect money owed to me in business.

I later decided that as I am also a Certified Identity Theft Risk Management Specialist that would I would also become an associate and share this service with others.

Do you sell these policies as a sales associate? Do you investigate for the company?

My experience from my end of things - and this is only my personal experience - is that if it is anything involved by the time you pay the premium and then pay for the "extra" advice you are not coming out ahead financially. I've seen divorces that would cost $10,000 on the street end up costing $15,000 with pre-paid legal because people don't shop around and assume they are getting a good deal.

Same with Wills - you can walk in as a stranger and pay $100 or pay the prepaid legal premium and $200 as a policy holder.

This very well may only be in my area.

And the one time I looked into it - and it was part of a job - 75% of the meeting consisted of attempt to talk me into being a sales association; 15% was hearing about the accomplishments of the Attorney in similar cases; 10% was legal advice. And there could be more legal advice at a reduced rate - which was more than my personal Attorney charges.

I found it to be one big sales ploy. As Frchuck said, eventually all of your relatives have all the Tupperware and prepaid legal plans they use in a lifetime.

I sell the policies for the company. There are a lot of people out there that can't afford to talk to a lawyer. Legal aid, in Canada, is a joke. People need to know what their rights are.

I know that there are people that don't like the company and that's OK. I have always had very good results with the service and that's the only reason I would ever attach my name to anything like that.

I think it is the same as anything, if the person selling you something over sells and under delivers, then you are going to have a very upset customer. I would never tell someone that a service would or could do something if it couldn't, it's not in my moral fiber.

I don't know you other than what you've posted so I don't know what is or is not in your moral fiber. I know if you sold Tupperware you would probably recommend it because it's how you make a living. Therefore, I am somewhat skeptical concerning your recommendation here.

That being said - apparently people have prepaid legal insurance and have gotten use out of it and feel it's a good bargain.

I wish you would have said from the beginning that you are a sales rep for the company.

I didn't mention on this thread that I was a rep for the company, that was on another thread. You were the one who brought both together.

The only reason I mentioned it on the other thread was that you told the lady she needed to talk to a lawyer. I just mentioned an affordable option. I did not hide the fact on that thread. I am very open about that fact, or so I thought.
