    Whirlpool washer will not agitate but will spin and drain
    Model# LA5530XSW2

    My washer will fill up but will not agitate, you can hear a humming noise and can smell something. It will drain & spin just not agitate.

    Please help me how to resolve this problem.

    As a follow-up for anyone who might be able to answer the question above... does it usually take more power to run the agitate or the spin cycle?

    In drain and spin cycles the motor turns one direction.In agitate it turns the other direction.Drain and spin definitely take more power.Sounds like your agitate direction motor winding is shot.Probably need a new motor.Could also be a transmission gear problem, like a lockup preventing the motor from turning in the agitate direction.
