Both prices seem to be on the high side to me. Try putting some oil in the motor and spinning it by hand, get a different a/c company, shop around.

Be very careful in dealing with the people that told you what was wrong with your furnace, and I would not let them replace the motor. The motors do go bad but it does not cost anywhere near that much to replace the motor. So be careful.

I am going through the same thing. My motor was replaced but still doesn't work. At least they returned the motor ($495). The labor seems pretty high since it only took about a half hour to change out.

For got to mention to check the vents for blockage. I was surprised to find leaves at the blower when it was removed. Maybe the blower is stuck with something a critter was making a home with.

The labor price is way to high, the cost of the blower seems high also, but that depends on the brand of the furnace. IF your vent goes out through the roof and there are trees higher than the vent nearby, it is very possible to get leaves in you draft inducer. If you get it all cleaned out, and can spin the wheel manually, then you may have a shot. If it has been plugged for some time it may have ruined the motor on the draft inducer.
Please give a make and model of the furnace. We should be able to walk you through replacing it yourself, normally a very simple job.

We've had our furnace for quite a long time and had to replace the draft inducer fan a couple years ago when it had about the same symptoms as you describe.
Those fans just have oilite bushings (they run quieter than ball bearings) which eventually dry out and then the motor will start slowly and won't run fast enuf to create enough airflow and then the pressure switch(s) won't pass voltage to the control.
Before I discovered they were widely available over the internet either from discount HVAC supply places or over eBay, I paid over $200 from the
Dealer. Then I discovered I could have gotten the same thing for under $100 over eBay.
They're usually not difficult to replace - a few mounting bolts, the air outlet connection, and usually 2 wires to connect. My wife did it with me guiding her over the phone and she is not the mechanical type.
