If you are referring to the Mayan calender and 2012. The ancient Mayans believed their the world as they knew it would end on 2012. I am not going to hold my breath when that year comes.

Every ancient civilization had their own doomsday predictions.

So what do your friends propose to do about it ?

December 12th 2012 is the end of the 12th baktun cycle in the mayan calendar. The mayans believed that the previous world to ours ended at the end of it's 12th baktun. I don't think they said anything about when they believed this world would end, though.

You don't have to worry about any doomsday in 2012, because this week we're all going to get sucked up into a black hole caused by experiments at CERN.

    (just kidding)

No kidding, They are making a big stink about that. Tiny black holes that consume everything? I think they are trying to create actual 'matter' just from pure energy. That in itself is a little creepy. However, it is human nature to find origin. It will never stop.

Here are my questions. What is ultimate goal of CERN? Does it have a practical purpose? Or just to see if they can do it? Are their applications to the real world that can be derived from this experiment?

The ultimate goal of CERN is to prove that God didn't create the heavens and the earth. They want to prove that the big bang theory actually happened. IMO, their experiment is dumb.

That seems to be the mission. That's what I thought.
Science has this particle accelerator and religion has a BANANA as proof of God. Google the banana thing, it's pretty funny.

Okay, fine. I believe that's what those scientists are trying to do. I can't prove it though. When I heard it on the news, the first thing that came to my mind was 'they're trying to prove the lord otherwise.'
