    Currency Symbol
Hi, I have a very simple question. Can some one tell me why does the currency symbol appear before the amount where as for any other magnitudes the symbol of the unit appears after the amount?? Like we write $200 but we write 10 Kg.

    Thanks for your posts.

Can't really answer, but not all currency symbols are before the fig: .50 (oops... was going to put a 'cents' sign there but there isn't one on my keyboard <G>)

In my opinion, I would think that it would be a matter of custom and tradition based upon location.

I must admit I always thought is was an accounting practice.

Harking back to the columned ledgers.

The pennies/cents have the currency symbol AFTER the amount.

You're probably correct about it being something that is normally done in accounting, Curlyben. Let's take $200.50 as an example. For instance, if it was two hundred dollars and fifty cents. It would make sense for it to be listed as a dollar sign at the beginning of the amount and then the cent sign to come after the whole amount so as not to interrupt the numeric orientation of the amount.
