    NYC Taxes married filing
Hope someone can help. I just received my tax returns from my accountant and he claims my wife and I owe ~$4000 to NYS. Combined we made roughly $165,000 split evenly between us both.

    Scenario:

I lived in NJ last year until November after my wedding-my wife in NY the entire year. I worked in both NJ and NY last year for the same company, and it appears my company took out NJ state tax while I worked in NJ for 2 months of the year. Then when I transferred to NY the company took out NY state tax but no local tax.

My wife resided in NY the entire year and paid her NYS state and local tax. Would it make sense that I would owe almost 4k?

    Thanks

That depends ENTIRELY on how much you had withheld. Without examining your W-2 and actually preparing the return, I cannot say for sure if you would owe $4,000.

If your accountant is competent, then it is likely you owe the money.

Just file separately. The IRS will NOT touch your refund for your husband's tax debt if you file that way.

I have used both TurboTax and Hrblock online tax preparation forms, and on both, I get that whether I am claimed as a dependent or not, my refund is the same, when I think I would get a bigger refund if Im not claimed as a dependent, at least that's how its worked in the past.
