    Finding Employment After Conviction
My son got into a fight with my husband and was convicted of Domestic Violence. He had to go to jail for four months. Now he is having a hard time finding a job even though the conviction was a misdomeanor, since it was his first conviction.

He is also Bipolar, we just found out, because he tried to cut his wrist. So things are pretty ruff right now.

He has moved to the State of Washington and so far hasn't found any employment.

Does it ever get any better for someone who is trying to start again?

Okay. I can see that you are looking around on the site for other things. I wanted to send you a private message to let you know that I have responded to your question. However, you don't have the private messaging function turned on in your profile, so I do hope that you know that I have responded.

My son is now 28 years old. We just found out three weeks ago, that he is bipolar, although we always thought he was.

What might be some of the reasons that he left any of those jobs? Depending on the reasons, that could also be one of the reasons he might be having trouble finding employment.

Golf Course, his dad works there and is the boss. He didn't like the work.
Lighting Company, there wasn't any work and he got paid very little.
    Fishing Boat, seasonal work
Italian Restaurant, they wanted him to come back but he wanted to leave and go back to Seattle.

He's a really good worker and all his bosses have liked him.

Since he was convicted of "Domestic Violence" for fighting with his Stepdad, it just puts more strain between them that he can't find a job now. Also, he was turned down in Tennessee when he went to rent an apartment. Seems really unfair that people are punished for the rest of their lives for one stupid act.

I'm assuming that he graduated from high school. But, has he had any other education or training besides that which he might have received in high school? Also, would it be possible for some of the former employers to write some letters of recommendation for him?

He could get the letters of recommendation easily. The only one I'm not sure of is the fishing boat. He jumped into the water and swam to shore (quit without notice). His father was the Superintendent at the golf course. His last boss didn't want him to quit and wished him well.

Yes. It is a shame that people can too often be remembered for only the worst thing that they ever did and not for the good they did or might be able to do in the future.

He only graduated from high school. He was in the gifted children's program all the way through until the 10th grade. He failed the 9th, but he was a year ahead, so they put him in the 10th grade anyway. Then he failed the 12th and repeated it and still graduated at 18 years old.

He is living with two friends. One works for a construction company and his boss is letting them both live in the upstairs of his home.
