Should I wait to go to the doctor?
Sorry but this is probably going to be long. I'm 20, almost 21, and I had a son dec '06. I had the Mirena IUC put in 6 weeks later, and had really strange bleeding which my doctor said was normal, but my husband and I decided to try for another child, so we had it taken out this last February, so I only had it in for a year. I have been having really irregular periods, but my last two were the worst. They were both 23-24 days long, with only 14 days in between them. Both were heavy bleeding, different colors from brown to bright orange. My husband travels a lot with his job, and we are out of state at the moment. Yesterday I woke up with bad cramps, and painful urination, so I went to the ER here, since I'm out of state, and found out I have a UTI, and they said that I really need to go to a gyn to get the period stuff checked out... its not a question of if I'll go to the doctor, but when? So here is my question, I will be out of state for a few more weeks, so should I find a doctor here to get checked out, or wait until I go home to my doctor who has all of my records?

If it were me I would find a doctor that can see me right away. When you make the appointment make arrangements for your doctor to send them your records.

I take it you have always had regular 28 day cycles before putting in the Mirena IUD. Any foreign body is a wick for infection and the fact that you have such abnormal periods may be because you have an infection from the IUD. However, the antibiotic you are taking from the urinary tract infection, may also clear up any infection in the uterus, depending on which antibiotic used. Since you are on antibiotics, you can safely wait until you get home to your regular doctor. You might want to try straightening out your cycle with a few months of birth control pills possibly, and then try for another child. The IUD may have irritated the uterus when put in and is still causing a nidus of infection, don't know though. Ob/gyn retired.
