My female lab Sadie is 1 year old and a great deal of fun. She is high high energy which is fine. She jumps up a lot on people when she wants to go out and does not always come back on command if she has a better offer. My question is does anyone have experience with a hand held shock type collar. My brother used it on his dog and she is very obedient. He no longer even needs it

My Sister used a shock collar on her out of control Boxer and she whiped him into shape real quick. Just use it when absolutely necessary, She taught him to stay in the yard with no fence and it prob saved him from getting hit by a car.

My boyfriend has a black lab and when he got him he was hyper. He trained his dog by using a kennel and it worked well. The dog listens very well, you just have to stick with it.

His sister in law lab is around the same age as yours and she does the same thing and it works well. The dog no longer crews on things or jump on people because it does not want to go back in the kennel.

Using a shock collar can work.But you need to use it with caution. Most have several settings and different size prongs based on the coat of the dog. Do not use the highest setting. Also the shock should be used to train one behavior.

I had a intact German shephard and lived on large fram acreage. Deer and coyote where common vistiors to the yard. I used the shock collar on a low setting ( I shocked myself to check jolt) it did not take long one or two times and he knew to come when called . After a while I did not even need to turn collar on just putting it on him kept him close.

In my opinion, shock collars should only be used when every other option has been exhausted. Certain situations where the dogs life could be in danger, or a human is in danger. A shock collar should never be substituted for basic command training! This takes time and patience, but it isn't rocket science.

Look up dog training info on the internet, buy some training books, watch some training video's or the Dog Whisperer. Do whatever else you can do first. I have a feeling you are looking for a quick fix. Your dog will be better trained if she obeys your commands, and not because she is being shocked into doing it. You will have a much more loving and loyal pet, and she will gain more trust in you!

I will reiterate again, shock collars should not be used in place of proper training. There are many other techniques that can and should be used, before a shock collar is implemented. However, sometimes it is necessary in extreme situations, to protect and in some cases save your dogs life, or a human life.

I have used a shock collar on myself, and if used correctly they really don't hurt your dog. It gives them a quick correction. But again, I have to say, they shouldn't be necessary in most cases if you do your job as a pet owner.

Electrical fences can also work if you don't have a fence. I do realise that for some people that it isn't feasible to have a fence. They just give a quick and harmless shock. What I DON'T like about them, is it keeps your animal from getting out, but it doesn't keep other animals from getting in, and then your pet can't get away. It really should only be used with supervision. Again, proper training should be your FIRST choice!
