How to retrieve data from an old hard drive?
My old computer crashed. I removed the hard drive from it. I have a new computer with the same operating system (XP) and the same file system (NTFS). How can I retrieve the data from the old hard drive? I understand about making the old drive a "slave" drive but how do I get the system to recognize it and assign a drive designation without reformatting it?

    Thanks!

I would suggest getting a hard drive enclosure.

This will allow you to connect the old hard drive to the new computer via USB and transfer anything you want from the old to the new.

When you plug in the USB, the computer should recognize that and give you the option to open it.
