I think this is a homework question: Jose Rizal was a 19th-century Filipino novelist. Nolo me Tangere was one of his novels, El Filibusterismo the other (there have been homework questions here regarding this other novel, too). Captain Tiago and Maria Clara are characters in the novel. Rizal's an important figure in Filipino literature and history.

To Ana: a good place to start researching this is Wikipedia - a discussion of the novel is available in multiple languages, and it provides a number of links to other resources you can use.

If memory serves me right... He did know that she was not his daughter but as the real father is a priest he just kept the secret... to preserve the honor of his wife and for fear of the influential priest...
