Greek Wall Clip, what does it say?
I tried to upload a picture but it was kicked back. Will look at it again and try to downsize the picture. But I'm hoping to find someone who understands all the writing and symbols on the clip. I believe it is bronze. It has a picture of a ship on one side and a face on the other. There is also what appears to be an inscribed name inside. Also inside is an "antelope or goat" symbol maybe with a date under it I believe. Also some numbers inside it. I can email anybody who wants to receive a picture to look at. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi there Ace High. Clough let me know you would like information on how to resize and post images. I tend to be an "A to Z" person so please don't be offended by my step by step. I may post on two posts. I type like I talk... a lot! LOL

Have you saved these images to a file on your computer? You should have a file perhaps 'MY PICTURES" where you can save images. If the images are attachments on your e-mails, you should be able to left click to choose each, right click and and it will give you the option to open or save as. Click on "Save As" and it will give you the options of where you can save it.....you should see My Documents, My Music, My pictures, etc. Best to save in "My Pictures" as a .jpg file. If you click on My Documents, you should see as you scroll down, a yellow folder that says "My Pictures" on the list. Open that folder to "Save your image as" and type in name then click enter. It will save it in that folder.

Bring up "MY PICTURES" folder where you image is saved. Left click on image once (this chooses it, does not open it) then right click on it. Run your cursor over "OPEN WITH", it should show you several choices...if you see Microsoft Photo Editor, left click to open. Your image will show up in that program on your screen. At the top of that screen, you will see File, Edit, View, Image, etc. Left click on IMAGE, it should have a drop down box giving options, left click on "RESIZE" There will be a box that appears that shows the size of your image. On the right side it will show UNITS... on the drop down box you can choose inches or pixels, choose pixels. On this site, when you choose "GO ADVANCED", that is where you can add the image and to do so, the image cannot be larger than 750 pixels. On mine, whatever is largest, height or width, I change it to 400 and the smaller measure changes automatically. As long as the largest dimension, whether height or width is not over 750 pixels, the image should upload nicely. Your choice of size up to 750.

Once you have done this, PLEASE got to File and choose "SAVE AS"... you can name that image the same as original but add the word at the end as resized. That way you retain the larger image but also have one you can post. If you want the image to be fairly large, you can go with the 750 pixels, I have used 600 but generally choose 400. That is just personal preference.

Second Part of instructions Ace High. Hope this helps.

If I have not left out a step in the instructions, this should allow you to resize your image to allow you to post using "Go Advanced" on the "Answer this Question" box in which I am typing. I will apologize ahead for mistakes I might have made as I have typed.

Ok, I am operating on the assumption that you have now resized your photo, saved it in a file folder and are ready to post.

Right after my post, there will be a box as you know already of course (and forgive me if I am being too elementary in my instructions... that is the only way I can do things... A to Z.

On "Answer this Question: click on "Answer this Question: click on ". Type whatever description, discussion or details you want the viewer to see in the first box then scroll down (do not submit yet), you will see “Additional Options” the first part will have boxes with check marks in them. Make sure the first three are checked. Scroll down, the next box will say "Manage Attachments". Type whatever description, discussion or details you want the viewer to see in the first box then scroll down (do not submit yet), you will see “Additional Options” the first part will have boxes with check marks in them. Make sure the first three are checked. Scroll down, the next box will say "Manage Attachments". Left click on that. A box will come up that says "Browse Button" First box will say upload file from your computer with a "Additional Options". Left click on Browse button. Box will come up:
    Choose File
Look in: (on this one, you scroll to find the folder that holds your image, open it, then left click to select image you have resized. Click Open. It will place the information of location of said image, Left Click on upload. Wait just a few moments. When it is finished, X out that screen, you will be on "Manage Attachments" area and it will show just above where it says "Submit Answer". This should then show text you typed in first box and below that, image you selected and uploaded. I sure hope I haven't left out a step. As I said, if I have, we can get back on track another way. I will help in anyway I can.

Please don't let this frustrate you. It took me awhile and the patience of other posters helping me to learn how to post images. Best to you!

    Hi, Ace High!

I did have to merge your two questions together because otherwise things would get kind of confusing. It's best to have everything about your original question on one thread. I will return sometime later this evening to see what I can do about the images. Thanks!

I remember when I first joined this site and didn't know how to do a lot of things! It really was kind of embarrassing! I did have to ask someone about how to post images also.

Anyway, here is one of the images that I found on the site that you have listed. I have also enhanced it a little so that things are easier to see.

Here is also your image of the whole "clip", as you call it. Is there a reason that you call it a clip? I think that it is some kind of ornament. How large is it, please?

Sorry, I forgot to give a general discription. The item seems to made of bronze. The round face part is 2 1/2 inches in diameter. The "hanger" part is 3/4 inches tall. It has a spring inside holding the front and back together. When pressed open I guess you could support a some sheets of papers. I really have no clue what to call it. A paper weight maybe? I guess my pictures didn't tell the whole story. I get the impression it may be a gift type item!? It has a name? Inside (see photos posted earlier) with some sort of logo with a date. I don't know the significance of the image of the ship on the flip side. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ace

Ace, I resized and lightened a few of your images of the Greek Wall Clip. I won't add the ones Clough already did. I resized to 450 so if they are not large enough here, we can go back and resize again. Hope this helps. Very interesting piece.

Thanks for all the help. BTW, the table that Clough re-did in the Arts thread was great. There is no way I would have believed the before and after photos were of the same table. Also the statues. Amazing work. -- Ace

jrebel7 has posted images that I didn't find. Great job, jrebel7! In my opinion, I think that we should concentrate on what those Greek words mean and also what this thing is really called. Is it a clasp or medallion of some kind? I have no doubt, that somewhere on the Internet, there will be found to be a similar type of object or maybe another example of the object itself. But, we just need to find the right words to search for it.

Ancient Ships: The Ships of Antiquity - Roman Galleons

I found a link to some interestingly similar Roman coins at the above link. I know it does not solve your mystery, but hopefully it is a clue? Perhaps just a Roman influence on the Greek item in your pictures?

This link talks about similar items... and about the ship on your item... PearlShops4U Ebay Treasures & Research: 1947 Greek Medallions It still seems to be unclear what the actual purpose of the item is.
