    Filing 1040EZ as a F1- Student
I am a PhD Student on F-1 visa since 2002 August. I have been filing 1040NR EZ until this year. But this year since I have completed 5 years, I understand that I have to file 1040EZ. I have completed the form but last minute nagging doubts persist. I will appreciate it if you can help. I have two questions

    1) My W-2 shows that social security and Medicare taxes are with held. Can I claim these back, if so how?

    2) Do I need to send a letter saying I am changing my filing status from Non-resident to resident? Also do I send a proof of my F1- visa?

    Thank you in advance.

Normally if you have completed 5 years on F-1, then for 6th year you file resident tax return. You will pay FICA taxes and will not get back. You don't need to attach any Change of status letter.

You should file as a resident but you should also talk to the school. If you are working on campus, you probably should not be paying the FICA. Check with your HR department.
