    Claiming parent as dependent
My mom and dad were visiting me here in the U.S. for over two months in 2007. And I spent over $30,000 in medical expenses (for diagnostic tests), not covered by insurance.

Can I claim her as a dependent, and how could the healthcare spend be factored in, if at all? I am a U.S. citizen.

    Thank you in advance.

I could never claim my mom when I was caring for her over the years, but my accountant found deductions for a few things because I was her caregiver. I don't believe you can claim her as a dependent, let alone recoup some of the medical expenses. Was she not able to pay herself ?
