    Why do you think you're not getting back the correct amount? Who prepared your tax return? Was it a tax professional? Discuss your concerns with the preparer ; (s)he should be able to explain it to you.

    If you discover, or suspect, errors on your return, you propably need to discuss it first with your tax preparer as a first step. Once you confirm the errors you may need to indicate what kind of errors have occurred, because IRS will usually correct errors that occur in math or requested forms. Such as W-2s or requested schedules you missed to file appropriately.
    In some cases you may need to consider amended return, like large errors, such as: Filling statues, income and/or deduction significant mistakes.
    The for 1040X is that required return in such case, accompanied with your missed schedules and/or incorrectly input w-2s or 1099s. You must file the form 1040X within three years (tax periods) after the date you filed your original return in order to be entitled to a refund, or within two years after the date you paid your taxes, whichever is later.
    As the way it's designed, form 1040xhas three columns;
    Co A- To inpute the original amounts figured on form 1040,
    Co C- To put the new amounts that you think it's correct or more accurate,
    Co B- Which shows the difference between the previouse two columns A & B

    In such a case, you need to explaine on the back of this form the reasons for the changes you have made on your amended return in brief and understandable way. Please don't forget to attach any additional schedules you added to your amended return, and the year of the amended return.

    ADDITIONAL NOTES:
    There are exceptions to the 3-year rule for certain items such as net operating losses, general business credit carry backs, bad debts and worthless securities. Please review the instructions to Form 1040X for exceptions.

    If you are filing more than 1 amended return, make sure you mail each return in a separate envelope to the IRS center that applies to where you live.

    A change in your federal form may affect your state tax liability and require an amended state return. I would recommend you to contact your state tax department to inquire more information.
    Hopefully this advice is helpful... Good luck :-)

    If errors were made by a tax professional, talk with the tax pro. Once you convince her that there were errors, she should offer to fix them by filing the For 1040X FREE OF CHARGE.
