    Reversing valve not reversing
I have a Goodman package heat pump model PHJ030-1A. I found a leak in the condenser coil, in the "U" shape joint. I made some checks, reversing valve coil: the resistance was 17. Something ohms, found 24 volts going to the coil, but didn't check for amps. O.K. Would low freon stop the reversing valve from switching to heat mode? O.K. Let say that the leak was fix, what would stop the valve from working.

Reversing valves do go bad and not just the coil part. The internal parts of the valve go bad also. This work is usually left to a professional due to the refrigerant recovery laws and the brazing needed to fix or replace any part of the sealed system.

The question is if low freon would stop the reversing valve from working. I know the system has to be pump to a recovery system, for the atmosphere, cause of the freon. When I do call HVAC. I want to know what is wrong with my unit, so I want get rip off. If I do need a reversing valve I would let HVAC do the work for the warranty.

The valve has pressure on different sides depending upon if it is in the heat pump mode or A/C. Some valves have a balance cap tube and some do not. To check for a bad valve put your gauges on the unit and cycle to see if the valve is working. In many cases you can hear it kick in also.

Good luck getting the valve replaced under warranty unless the company that sold and installed the unit is doing the work and then you will still have to pay for ancillary charges.

What is the pressure of the system in heat mode if the outside temp. is in the 20's-30's. Reversing valve part #is B1227316S, does this valve have the balance cap tube? When you turn the unit on it go to cool mode and will not cycle to heat. The valve does not make any noise.

Had to add freon. Low freon will stop a reversing from switching from cool to heat or heat to cool. According to which unit you have. Just by adding freon can save you hundreds of dollars in repair cost. G.A. Clements
