You have to do both, when you start in life you normally don't have the money to buy a home to start with, plus often if you are in college, you don't know where you will end up, and even at the start of your career you don't know about transfers and moves so often renting makes sense. So as you rent you are to save up for a down payment to own your own home.

Paying off credit cards is merely one part of a many part objective.
First credit cards are a sign you are spending more money than you are making, this is a bad sign. Also credit card debt over what you can pay off a balance is one of the largest problems in america causing many people to go bankrupt.

So part of a getting out of debt is to have an emergany fund, built up so that you have some money in case something serious happens.
Along with that, you need to stop using credit cards and start paying down the highest interest ones first. After that you can start working on a savings plan and investment plans
