    Trane Air Handler/Heat Problems
    Hi,

I have a Trane airhandler system in my house with an oil burner furnace that feeds hot water to the heat exchanger inline with the air handler and the ducting. We suspect our system has ver poor efficiency overall, as it appears to run the hot water often through the heat exchanger, and ofen the fan goes on/off frequently, and even blows cool air sometimes. The house has 2 very similar air handler systems (both Tranes; 1 just smaller than the other) and both run in conjunction with the main oil burner/hot water system. We have basic Honeywell thermostats that we believe are working properly (we've even swapped them between the 2 systems as they are exactly the same units). We're looking for general description of how the system works, and basic troubleshooting to help isolate where the problem(s) may be.

    Here's some very basic info:
Thermostats: basic Honeywell, round, thermostats. 4 wire(s) that control either heat (winter) or AC (summer). Fans set to "Auto"; mode currently (winter) set to "Heat"

    AirHandlers: Trane

Oil burner, with forced hot water through heat exchangers at air handlers; the water temp exiting the burner seems to be set at approx 180deg F.

There are also some sort of Honeywell controllers on the heat exchangers that seem to also control, override, or limit the running of system above or below a set temperature (not sure if these are set at the right temparatures - both currently set to 160deg F)

Is there any way to know if our system is wired correctly? We can't seem to find a GOOD general wiring diagram containing all of the system components.

What temperatures should the Honeywell heat controllers at the heat exchangers be set to? We've tried 10deg lower and 10deg higher, and it doesn't seem to change anything.

Any advise or good resources to learn about about this type of system?

    Thanks!

You have a water to air heat system.
Most of those systems are design/build and are wired in many different ways.
180 degree water temp out is good for a fan coil system
The controls on the heat exchanger/hot water coils are probably minimum set or fan lock off controllers to prevent blowing cold air. They could also be used for many other things.

A reputable company should have left a wiring diagram because since it is field built and installed no one really knows exactly what you have except for some part numbers and name brands.

Leave your heat controllers set as they were when you found them till you find the problem.

You need to test your control system to find the offending part for your fan problem. This can be done by finding the control for the fan. Those could be the controls next to the hot water coil air handlers.

Here is a link to Honeywells site. Just type your control number in the lower box on the right side. You can look up the controls yourself and see how they work and what they are for. Since we are not on site all we can do is guess at what you problem is but you will have the advantage now with the Honeywell site. Good luck.
