We just purchased a home that is 27 yrs old...with alot of DIY projects it will be beautiful. My question is for the main bathroom. There is some kind of texture on the walls (it looks like popcorn from ceilings), we have tried almost everything to remove the texture and it just will not come off. Other than this popcorn texture on the walls...the walls are in great shape. Can we "mud" (using joint compound?) over the texture? I know if we did it would take several coats of "mud". If it is a good idea to "mudd" the walls, what kind of primer is best for in the bathroom and will hold the paint on the walls? We have "mudded" several other rooms but there was no texture on the walls. I read on another website that you have to be careful with what primer you use on the walls after mudding in bathrooms. Have you tried using a paste or gel stripper to get the texture off the walls? If the texture is simply a part of the paint, that should work. Sure, you can mud over the texture. It might take a number of coats to do that. However, if you can get it off using a paste or gel stripper, it's probably going to take you a lot less time in the long run than covering the texture with mud and than sanding it smooth. Also, you will be more assured of making the walls as flat and smooth as possible by stripping it off.
