Withdrawals from methadone are/can be brutal, can't sleep, severe flu like symptoms, stomach cramps, anxiety. The more dangerous ones are seizures and I 'm sure there are others.

If your doctor is supervising you than you should not worry too much, if you feel different than tell him and perhaps hecan prescribe something that will help. I know if your having trouble sleeping they may prescribe you something for that, it's a quite common thing.

    Hi Debbie,

First off, congratulations to you and your husband on deciding to do step-downs off methadone. It would be helpful to know what your maintenance dose was and for how long. You mentioned getting down to 24mgs--what was it originally?

While everyone has different results, and some may find 1mg/day tolerable, it can be very individual and depend on how much you were on for how long. The NADA protocol has been a vital support for over 30 years worldwide. Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, NY was actually able to dissolve their methadone clinic and detox people successfully using the protocol in conjunction with group support and counseling. They've had success for almost 30 years now. I've assisted individuals and couples successfully detox from methadone using supportive acudetox where other methods failed. There is a specific protocol, and it is only administered within outpatient community settings, inpatient treatment centers, and detox facilities. It is very successful.

If you'd like help finding facilities in your area, please feel free to send me a note in this system.

    Best of luck.
