Problem: cannot communicate properly between computers

Both pc's using XP prof OS

Two computers routing through a belkin 55g wireless router; router connects to a broadband service.
Workstation 530 connects direct to router via CAT5 cable - laptop connects to router via wireless connection.

I can ping successfully:
All 3 from w/s 530 using ip addresses i.e. router, w/s & laptop
All 3 from laptop using ip addresses i.e. router,w/s & laptop
w/s 530 using it's own computer name
Laptop using it's own computer name

I cannot ping :
From w/s 530 to laptop using computer name and vici versa
Message "ping request could not find host ......"

How can I create a network link to share data?
Appreciate any ideas & help.

Tried this and got, "The network location cannot be reached. For info about ......."

Yes both laptop and workstation are in the same workgroup and have different names.
IP addresses are set on each machine to be picked up from the router - "Obtain an ip address automatically" + "Obtain DNS server address automatically". e.g. router... 1, w/s... 2, laptop... 3.
Router is a belkin54G wireless router.

On your laptop that is connecting wirelessly, ensure that you have both settings under TCP/IP properties:

1. Client for Microsoft Networks
2. File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks

I have tried this suggestion but it does not produce the link.
My laptop does have internal wireless capability but I am using a card I purchased along with my belkin54g router. Could tHis complicate things? I can connect OK to the internet via the router.

If you're laptop came with a built in wireless, remove the PCMCIA wireless card that came with your router and try that. This may be interfering. Just ensure that you can find the router in your available wireless networks and that you have that laptop in the same workgroup.

Are they in desame work group name? If is is cheek your try to ping the wireless w/s on wired w/s and try ot again on wireless. If both end ping in each other go to any folder you want to share and do it but if it did not ping yopu have propblem with your network.

Try adding the IP address & Hostname of the machines in host file. You can find it in system32/drivers/etc/hosts.

You are able to ping from the workstation to the laptop using IP address?
You ARE NOT able to ping from the workstation to the laptop using the laptop name?

Is the router your DHCP server as well or are you using fixed IP's?
If DHCP: try doing ipconfig /release <enter> then ipconfig /renew from a dos prompt.

What are you using for WINS? When you type ping <computername> the resolution is done with WINS by default so you would have to have something setup for that. If you don't have a server to do that you will need to use the lmhosts file as another user already suggested. Lmhosts lookup is enabled by default as well but you will have to manually add the computer names to that file on each computer... if you change the computer name you'll have to update the lmhosts files.

Not exactly true. Check the WINS advanced tab of the Network adapter to see if NETBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled. The defaut tab should work.

Note that with this method, it may take over 45 minutes for a computer name to be recognized. It's in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Also when computers leave a network, they may still show up. What do you expect from MicroSoft? Only with WINS or lmhosts can a computer name be rcognized immediately and recognized across subnets.

I was thinking the same thing... blocked netbios, which would explain why the OP is also unable to use file shares.

Make sure port 137, 138, and 139 are open in the firewall, if you have one.
