Hey everyone,
I was hoping someone had some help for me.
I'm a virgin, but I have these two bumps, one on the outside of my vagina entrance, one on the inside of my leg right next to that. I'm worried about hpv/genital warts, but can you get these without full blown sexual contact? When the first one appeared I had never had oral or any other kind of sex. They're sort of like a small bump underneath the skin. They have no pus or discharge and they don't pop when squeezed. They're just kind of there. The first one has been there for about 6 months, and the other for about 1. another was there very briefly, but went away after about a week. Does anyone have any ideas?

For you to get HPV or genital warts you have to have had genital to genital contact with someone who is infected with the disease.

Do you shave?

Yes, I do shave. But these have been there a lonng time. And not shaving doesn't seem to have any effect on them.

If you haven't had any contact with someone you should be Ok there are many other things it may be. Hair follicles come to mind maybe or it could just be a normal blemish that came about. Or it could be something else that's serious you may want to see a doc just to be sure and put your mind at ease.

I'm trying to avoid having to see the doctor about this, as it's not really something I want to discuss with my parents and I don't have my license yet. Can you get an std from anything other than sex or oral sex, such as fingering, handjobs, or public things like toilet seats?

Not toilet seats, but you can get an STD from just about anywhere else. If he has a wart on his finger and he fingers you, you bet it's possible.

Yeh touching of ones area and then another will transmit certain Stds. I think being open with your parents will not get you in trouble they will appreciate it and you will end up having a better relationship in the long run.

So you can get genital warts from regular warts? Aren't they two completely different viruses?
I don't think that's what happened, but that's odd.

Genital warts as a name, can be many places on your body, under the arms, on the neck, many places, genital areas are just the most common, they are easy to get from often causual contact.

So basically, you can get genital warts, or hpv, from anyone you touch casually, without genital to genital contact?

Okay, here is the deal, warts are from the HPV virus. They are called genital warts because they appear on the genitals, but a wart is a wart is a wart.

If a man with warts on his fingers manipulates a woman's genitals, she can get warts on her genitals. She has genital warts, he does not.

Chuck, you cannot have genital warts in your armpits. They call them genital warts because they appear in the genital area and an armpit or neck is not considered genital.

Okay, so in all likelihood I probably have hpv. Lovely. I've read that it usually goes away on its own after about a year. Is this true?

No, it does not. Genital warts are forever, it is a virus in your body that comes and goes. The lumps and bumps may go away, but the virus lives on. There is currently no cure for HPV. And if a woman has it on her cervix she is at increased risk for cervical cancer. So, you better go get checked out. If you are a virgin and you do not have it, I recommend the Gardasil shot. It is in 3 doses... one dose today, then in 2 months and the 3rd in 6 months. It prevents ALL of these forms of HPV.

Just an FYI, it is also the same virus that people get with cold sores or fever blisters on their lips.

Okay, but that's definitely not what I've read.. everything has said that your body builds up an immunity to it and kills the virus itself, although there isn't a cure for it. Also, the strain that cause warts is not the same type that cause cervical cancer.
