I need a example of how to use the Speed Formula... Speed = distance/time.. for example---if I am running on a treadmill at 5mph for 1 mile-how long should it take me to run a mile?

off course you can use your common sense and its very obvious. But some people have trouble seeing simple things like this so if you insist on plugging in numbers into equations and you feel more comfortable doing so then do so. You have the equation you just need to rearrange it to get time since your question asks how long which means time. So if we rearanged the equation you get

time = distance/speed

you know distance is 1 mile and speed is 5mph and now just solve for time. Simple as that

let t = time.

5 miles/1 mile = 1 hour/t

Solve for t.

5 miles times t = 1 mile times 1 hour or this way:

5t = 1 hour

Divide both sides by 5 to find t.

t = 1/5 of an hour.

What is 1/5 of one hour?

One hour = 60 minutes.

Then 1/5 times 60 = 12 minutes....So, it will take 12 minutes to run 1 mile.
