Found lost dog, okay to ask for picture to claim?
    Hey everyone :)

    Okay so here's the deal...

I have taken in a lost puppy.

I saw hime running around my daughters bus stop yesterday and he almost got hit 3 times. Some boys called him over then eventually made their way down to my sister-in-laws house (where I was) because they are friends with her daughters. They said this dog has been running around for a couple days and their parents wouldn't let them take it it. My sister-in-law thinks she saw it running around last week as well. At any rate, they asked would I take it.

Of course I did, because the poor thing obviously wasn't "street smart" and was going to wind up getting hit.

I know it's someone's pet... or at least used to be.

He is a black Scottish Terrier. He had a collar on, but no tags. The collar looked old. But for being a Scottish Terrier, he was still somewhat groomed. I mean, he face wasn't overgrown too bad. I brought him home, and gave him a bath. He was FILTHY!

I am going to make up flyers today and post them around the neighborhood and in local groomers etc.

I don't want to put too much info on the flyer, because I don't want just anyone to "claim" him who is just trying to get a free dog. I am willing to keep him.

My question is... is it unreasonable to ask for photos of the dog in order to be claimed?

I was going to put on the flyer:

    FOUND
    Black Scottish Terrier
    Call to identify

When people start calling I was going to ask questions, like is the dog male or female (male), is his neutered (no), did he have a collar (yes), what color was the collar (green). But if he has been running around the neighborhood, observant people could know these answers.

I know I have tons of pictures of my dog, does everyone have pictures of their pets?

Is it unreasonable to ask for photos?

    Thanks!

No, it is not unreasonable to ask for photo identification. Asking those questions is not unreasonable either. The dog could not be from your neighborhood. Hope you find the owner, if not, then what are you going to do?

First of all it was very kind of you to take that poor baby in. Doesn't it feel great to help it out?
Take it to a vet and have them check to see if the dog is mircochiped, you may be able to find the owners this way.
I would give out as little info as possible on the fliers, maybe weight and color and the fact that it is a small dog. The rest the owners would have to fill in.
As for the picture black dogs are hard to photograph and get a good home picture(at least for me.. hopefully they will have one that is better than some of mine.

Well my daughter is already in love with him :( and has been asking to name him. But I have explained that someone may be very sad that they lost him and we have to try and find the people that lost him first.

I brought him home last night to see how he would do with my dog... and they did fine :)

The poor thing just ate a whole bunch then went to sleep haha
Just glad we found him when we did, he probably wouldn't have lasted much longer on the streets.

But I was going to put up flyers through the week and weekend, and if no one calls to claim him I will keep him... he is a really great dog, but I'm trying not to get attached... hopefully someone really loves him and misses him.

    Ooohhh microchip... that's a thought :)

Yeah I have a black dog too... and although he is hard to get a good pic of, I still have pics of him. :)
I mean I was more looking for a home picture of a black scottish terrier with a green collar. I just wasn't sure does everyone take pictures of their pets... and what to do if someone is able to answer all my questions but doesn't have any photos??

I just know, anyone in the neighborhood (like the boys that brought him to me) would know all those questions.

Well, that's the problem he was out looking for love. Hopefully he is not street wise, my guess is that he is. Watch that he doesn't try to mark your house in a few days when he gets comfy in his surrondings.
How old do you think he is?

Well I am afraid he has been out for awhile.

I have an un-neutered dog and he stays in my fenced yard. Either someone wasn't careful with him or something.

I have checked all the newspapers and drove around the nieghborhood last night and don't see any ads for any missing a scottish terrier.

Oh yeah, he and my dog have been trying to "mark" each other! Kind of gross haha but they stopped once they got used to each other haha.

I'm not sure how old he is... I am not familiar with Scottish Terriers, so I don't know how to base his age on his size. I think he is pretty young... probably 5-6 months maybe?

Yes, I have photos of all my pets. But this little guy may not have come from a caring/responsible home.
    1. He is not neutered.
    2. He is wandering( lost... for days.
    3. There ar no posters of him up.
Is he the right weight for his size?
If his owners showed up they would have to give me a helluva lot info to get him back. I would also print off some papers on the benfits of neutering him, along with a price list from a local vet. Actually if I found him he would probably be neutered tomorrow by my vet, or given to a scotty rescue if I did not want him for a pet. Me personally I don't feel to sorry for people that let their pets go unneutered and run around. My thoughts are they deserve better than that. Because 9 times out of 10 he will end up dead, if there isn't some intervention. I know I sound harsh... but I have picked up a few strays lately that have just broken my heart.

Well, if he is young then that may be the reason he is not neutered... In that case I would be a little more forgiving. I am glad to know that your dog is in a fenced yard. Macksmom... I preach neutering because of the health issues as well as the accidental breeding issues. For a dog to have cancer is devastating and neutering him takes away chances of certain types of cancers. The dogs are fine in a week or so after neutering.

Oh I know exactly where you are coming from... thats why I want to make sure people have to give infor that only they, as owners, would know/have.

I told my husband, that someone has to had listed losing this dog... I mean he is great. But for a puppy, as everyone thinks he is young, he is not very active... but he is probably wore out from being on the streets and is just relieved to have a warm safe home to be in.

How long should I leave the flyers up?

I ask, because if no one claims him, I am willing to keep him... my puppy is scheduled to be neutered the first week in November... I would add this puppy to the schedule, but I don't want to pay for vet visits, shots, and to get him neutered if the owners finally claim him.

I was thinking of leaving the flyers up all week and throughout the weekend... then if Monday comes and no one has called, taking them down.

The Aspca always told me 1 week. Also the paper in my area will run lost ads for free. You could also give that a try. Good for you for getting your dog neutered, I believe it makes them even better, more loving & contented pets.

He is so beautiful, watch out he will win your heart. He does look young and awfully small. You are an angel for helping him. Your post has really made me happy and sad at the same time. Happy that you care and sad that there is a little dog that has not been treated as it should have.

From his testicles, I would say he is more than six months they look quite large even in the picture. Let us know what the vet says about him.

Here is one from when I first found him.

Yeah it is hard for me to tell how old he is... just because I have never been familiar with Scottish Terriers... I know they are small dogs, but I think he is still a puppy. I will update when I get back from the vet :)

Yeah it breaks my heart that he has been out running around in the cold :( I will be sad to see him go, if he does go.
